Whether it’s physically or mentally, many of us, especially those reading this blog, choose to walk or wheel because we know it benefits us. Even after just a short time spent outside and moving in the fresh air, we feel better.
At Walking Scotland, we know that walking is good for you, for Scotland and the planet, but what does the population as a whole think?
Our latest Scottish Walking and Wheeling Survey asked people how much they agreed with a number of statements, including what motivates or stops them from walking, and if they would like to walk more.
Overall, health and wellbeing came out as the top reasons that people walk, with most people (over 70%) agreeing that they enjoy it because it’s good for their health (78%), helps them clear their head and concentrate (73%), or relax (72%). The majority agree that walking and wheeling is better for nature than taking the car (62%) and appreciate that it’s less likely to contribute to climate change than driving is (55%).
Although a third (34%) agreed they only walk or wheel if they don’t have an option, the majority shared that they actually want to be able walk or wheel more often, both for leisure (68%) or for things like going to the shops (63%).
Of all the reasons you could choose to walk, and there are many, we say just walk when you can.
Walking and wheeling require little or no specialist equipment and are arguably the most affordable, accessible and practical ways to get more physical activity into your day, look after yourself and help to look after your community.
