Walking isn’t only good for our physical, social and mental health. It’s also good for our communities, the environment and the economy.

Bruce got involved with Health Walks in early 2025 after a career change inspired him to develop his leadership skills.
He loves walking and talking to people. Becoming a Health Walk Leader ticked both boxes, as well as being the opportunity to give back to the community.
Bruce has enjoyed getting to know the walk regulars, who have so many stories to tell. He’s met great people and looks forward to the walks each week. Many friendships have developed in the group. Bruce is also enjoying the health benefits of boosting his step count through regular walking.
“For many walkers it’s a lifeline.“
Bruce felt supported from the start. Walk Leader training meant that he was empowered to lead and felt appreciated for all his efforts. When asked to sum up the experience, he said, “fun, rewarding and enjoyable”.
“Taking a lead and encouraging friendship amongst walkers is very satisfying. It’s nice to know that they are all getting along and have each other in their lives.“
He shared some advice for future Health Walk leaders:
“If you’ve led a team before and know how to handle a big group, then this could be for you. Give it a go, you’ll enjoy it, and it’ll be a pleasure, not a job! Get to know a few good routes too, I have a favourite one.”
