Caroline’s walking story

After a walk I feel so much better. I’m ready to face the day.

A woman in a purple raincoat walks along a path. There are fields and trees either side.

Caroline began walking regularly 3 years ago, after she became a carer for her husband, John. Walking is a way for Caroline to take some time for herself and support her wellbeing.

She’s also found that regular walking has had a positive impact on her physical health.

Caroline shared that walking and getting fresh air makes a difference to how she feels.

She also enjoys social benefits from walking, after joining a walking group for carers.  A warm welcome meant she soon developed friendships, with the group offering a strong support network for the members.

Caroline explains that it can sometimes feel isolating to be a carer. Getting out and about walking, whether one your own or with a group, is an opportunity to reset. Walking with others, especially those in similar situations, can be the chance to share experiences and concerns. The companionship has been important, as Caroline’s husband can often spend large periods of time in hospital.

The group often walk the same route and enjoy watching the seasons change. They sometimes end the walk with a coffee, where they reflect on how getting out together has improved their day. Caroline thinks everyone can benefit from regular walking, especially those caring for others.
