Karen volunteers as a Health Walk Leader in Ayr. As Karen’s working life had mostly been spent indoors, when she retired, she was keen to find a volunteering opportunity that would get her outside, active and connecting with people.
Karen started joining local Health Walks as a volunteer. After a few months, she decided to train to become a Health Walk Leader.
“It felt like a natural step because walking has always been part of who I am. It’s been wonderful to see these groups grow and to watch people discover the joy of walking together.”
In 2023, Karen moved to Ayr and continued volunteering, setting up new walking groups in the south of the town.
Over the years, Karen has taken on long‑distance routes too. Each journey has rewarded her with a sense of achievement, as well as moments of calm, reflection, joy and connection with nature.
“I was excited, proud and really pleased to be named a recent finalist for the South Ayrshire Sports Awards Volunteer Coach of the Year. I really appreciated the recognition. For me it wasn’t just about the award, it was being acknowledged for helping others stay active and connected. That’s what matters most to me.”
For Karen, walking is the thread that ties everything together. It lifts her spirits, keeps her fit and gives her the chance to explore new places and hidden paths.
“If I could share one message, it would be this: walking is simple, accessible, uplifting and enjoyable. You don’t need special equipment. A pair of comfortable shoes, the right clothing – in Scotland it’s important always to have your waterproofs handy – and the willingness to step outside. Whether you’re seeking better health, new friendships or a moment of calm, walking can offer it all.”
As a volunteer, Karen has seen how walking can change lives. Leading walks allows her to bring people together.
“We chat, laugh and enjoy the outdoors, but most importantly, we enjoy each other’s company. Friendships form along the way and I get such a boost from seeing people grow happier, healthier and more confident.”
